Long bio

Sean Davis, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where he holds the Rifkin Bennis Chair of Cancer Informatics and is Associate Director for Informatics and Data Science at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. He was a founding faculty member of the Department of Biomedical Informatics. He is board certified in pediatrics and holds an active medical license.

For almost two decades he has built open tools that make public genomic data easier to use. He wrote GEOquery, the Bioconductor package that connects R to the NCBI Gene Expression Omnibus; in 2025 it was downloaded 314,396 times from 112,736 distinct IP addresses, according to Bioconductor download statistics. He served on the Bioconductor Technical Advisory Board from 2008 to 2020. His current projects include OmicIDX, an open index of public sequencing metadata; CFDE Atlas, a knowledge base over the NIH Common Fund Data Ecosystem; and Orchestra, a platform for hosted bioinformatics training.

From 2005 to 2020 he worked at the National Institutes of Health, first as a research fellow at the National Human Genome Research Institute and the National Cancer Institute, then as a staff scientist and senior associate scientist in NCI's Center for Cancer Research. He completed a pediatrics residency at the University of Washington and the combined Johns Hopkins and NCI pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship. He earned his MD and a PhD in human genetics at the University of Pittsburgh and a B.S.E. in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University.
